Nobody’s enjoying COVID-19, no. Not the impact on healthcare systems, not the disease itself, not the lockdowns. On the bright side, I suppose there is a little amusement to be found in the curious baking frenzies enough to wipe out flour at supermarkets, or the hordes of people at parks who have dissociated from their office chairs to fulfil 5-year-old new year’s resolutions on exercise.
But of course, the bugs and plants are having a blast. Here in Singapore at least, grass-cutting has been suspended till what we call the “circuit breaker” is over. Our garden city is as in need of a haircut as the guy next door, and the next, and the next.
I haven’t been able to visit parks as often as I’d like, but in brief moments I’ve managed to photograph some pretty little grasses and weeds and trees flaunting their long-awaited freedom. The abundance of host and food plants has also led to the emergence of a larger than usual number of butterflies, to my delight.
As it so happens, today marks the end of the circuit breaker, and life resumes as per the new normal. Goodbye to wanton overgrowth for now; I’ll let the pictures speak of these strange times.
